[Umfrage zum Krieg im Irak]  People who want to share their views about the situation in Iraq now have another place to go. Researchers at the University of Wisconsin-Madison on Saturday announced the launch of a new, Internet-based survey about the U.S.-Iraq conflict.

The survey is open to anyone with Internet access. Web users can simply point their browser to www.journalism.wisc.edu/~dshah/protest/survey.html.

The researchers hope people from all sides of the debate will participate in the study. »This is a great chance for people to tell us what they think about the war and the protests,« said Professor Dhavan Shah, who is leading the project. »The more people we hear from, the more we can learn about these issues.«

Shah is a professor in the School of Journalism and Mass Communication at UW-Madison. The study is part of a class he teaches on mass communication and democracy, and he hopes the data will help train the next generation of journalists.

»This project grew out of a perception that the media aren't doing a great job covering this conflict,« Shah said. »We hope that by surveying thousands of Americans and looking carefully at the results, we can make sure the media do a better job in the future.«

This is not the first time Shah has investigated news coverage of important community and national events. His research includes studies of presidential politics, citizen decision-making, and political tolerance.

[Noch mehr für den SysAdmin]  Cocktail 2.0 (kostenlos) gibt Zugriff auf tieferliegende UNIX-Fähigkeiten (z.B. Journaling, Cron Scripts) und versteckte OS-Features (z.B. Sleeptime der Festplatte). Äußerst empfehlenswert!

Matt Neuburg writes in TidBITS today that people should Take Note of NoteTaker, the information management tool from AquaMinds. Meanwhile, a number of MNJ readers commented about NoteBook, the program from Circus Ponies Software that is also a descendant of the NeXT application called NoteBook.« Mir war Tinderbox zu verspielt, ich sollte die anderen beiden Tools einmal testen... (So viel zu testen — so wenig Zeit! )

[Leben ohne Micro$oft]  Open-Source-PIM Chandler 0.1 freigegeben. »Die Open Source Applications Foundation (OSAF) hat eine erste Version des Personal Information Managers (PIM) Chandler veröffentlicht. Bei der Open-Source-Software Chandler wurde für die Release 0.1 das Hauptaugenmerk auf die Architektur gelegt und nicht auf die Features für den Endanwender. Durch eine Peer-to-Peer-Technik sollen Privatanwender und kleinere Firmen im Endausbau Kalenderfunktion, E-Mail-Client Kontakt- und Aufgabenmanager sowie Web- und PDA-Zugang ähnlich Outlook erhalten. Die Organisation stellte den Source-Code und eine sehr umfangreiche Dokumentation zum Download bereit. Daneben stehen zurzeit Binaries für die Betriebssysteme Linux, Mac OS X und Windows XP bereit. [...] Allerdings wollen die Entwickler nicht einfach Outlook nachbauen; vielmehr will die OSAF den PIM neu überdenken und dabei moderne Komponenten wie integriertes Instant Messaging oder das Peer-to-Peer-Prinzip berücksichtigen. Schließlich soll der neue PIM kompatibel sein zu Anwendungen wie iCal, vCard und dem Jabber-Protokoll.« Notiz an mich: Unbedingt testen!

[Schlangenfraß]  ImageMagick ist eine sehr leistungsfähige Sammlung von Bibliotheken und Kommandzeilen Programmen zur Manipulation von Bildern. Mit Python Magick steht auch eine Bibliothek für Python zur Verfügung, die sich besonders für die Anwendung in CGI-Scripten eignen soll.
