Cry For A Shadow

George Harrison ist tot. Nein, Nachrufe können andere besser. Stattdessen möchte ich nur an eine meiner ersten und ältesten Beatles-Singles überhaupt erinnern, an Cry For A Shadow, einem von George Harrison und John Lennon komponierten Instrumental, vermutlich die erste professionelle Komposition der beiden überhaupt.

Der Song stammt aus der legendären ersten Session der Beatles von 1961 mit der damaligen Sankt-Pauli-Legende Tony Sheridan. Produzent war Bert Kaempfert (der auch mal mehr konnte als Easy Listening). Die Plattenhülle ist vermutlich nicht die originale (es war die Standardhülle der Deutschen Polydor für Rundfunkbemusterungen, die Single dagegen ist eine Buchclub-Pressung (Bertelsmann?)). (Und fragt mich nicht, wie ich an Bemusterungsplatten gekommen bin, das ist verjährt...)

Auf der (Doppel-) Single (so nannte man das damals) sind folgende Nummern zu hören:

1. The Saints (Trad./Sheridan)
2. Why (Sheridan/Crompton)
3. My Bonnie (Trad./Sheridan)
4. Cry For A Shadow (Harrison-Lennon)

Auf Why spielt George Harrison eine göttliche Gitarre und auf My Bonnie zeigt er, wie man mit kleinen Harmonieänderungen aus einem langweiligen Folksong eine heiße Nummer macht.

Und das war die Stärke von George Harrison. Die anderen waren die Show - er war das musikalische Fundament.
